Return to Highlighted Capital Projects

This capital project is one of seven active ENR upgrade projects designed to comply with the State‚Äôs Bay Restoration Program pollutant load limits.

The wastewater treatment process will be upgraded to state-of-the-art standard known as Enhanced Nurtrient Removal (ENR).  When complete, nitrogen concentrate levels will be reduced from 8mg/L to 3 mg/L and phosphorus from 2 m/L to 0.3 mg/L.

The Project

The current wastewater treatment process was originally designed based on past nutrient removal goals.  Upgrades change the existing process and includes:

  • modifications to ensure nitrification and provide new denitrification filters.
  • additional air diffusers/new aeration controls to optimize/ensure nitrification.
  • new denitrification filters to optimize nitrogen/phosphorous removal.
  • new ultraviolet disinfection system to decommision chlorine disinfection system
  • expansion of plant capacity from 6 million gallons per day (mgd) to 8 mgd.

  • Improves quality of our local waterways.
  • Improves quality of the Chesapeake Bay.
  • Meets Bay Restoration Program pollutant limits.
  • Significantly reduces post treatment pollutant discharge.
  • 38% of overall project cost funded by State grants.
