About Anne Arundel County Executive Laura Neuman

County Executive Laura Neuman
Laura Neuman (born February 3, 1965 in Baltimore) is the 8th County Executive for Anne Arundel County, a position she has held since February 22, 2013. A Republican, this is the first public office Ms. Neuman has held.
Before assuming the position of County Executive, the Anne Arundel County resident served as the Chief Executive Officer and President for the Howard County Economic Development Authority, where she advocated for businesses and encouraged them to start, locate or relocate to Howard County. In that position, Ms. Neuman gained a reputation for being focused, driven and determined. Those are the same qualities she shows in her current position as County Executive, along with a title she proudly boasts: fiscal conservative.
Ms. Neuman has held positions with multiple companies, including T. Rowe Price, Digex, Global Payment Systems (previously National Data Corporation) and CAIS Internet. Her most notable achievement in business was to build a technology startup called Matrics which raise $17 million in venture capital and was eventually sold for $230 million.
One of Ms. Neuman’s most astounding achievements is in education. Although she did not receive a high school diploma (she subsequently earned a GED), she was able to convince Loyola University in Baltimore to allow her to enroll in a master’s degree program despite not meeting the requisite requirements. She was successful in her efforts and later added the executive program at Stanford Business School to her credentials.
Among her numerous awards and recognitions are Most Influential Marylander; Top 100 Women in Maryland; Trailblazer by the Forum for Women Entrepreneurs and Spirited Women of Baltimore, in Balance. On February 11, 2014, Ms. Neuman received the Mary Pickersgill Award for Women’s Leadership in Business.
Of Ms. Neuman’s notable accomplishments is one that she reluctantly wears as a badge of honor or perhaps more accurately as a symbol of hope: rape survivor. As a teenager, Ms. Neuman was raped. Her focus, determination and drive led her to help police bring her attacker to justice. Her personal story has been chronicled locally and nationally.
Since taking office more than a year ago after the County had experienced one of its darkest periods, Ms. Neuman has been traversing the County meeting with residents. She has held listening sessions, town hall meetings, attended community gatherings and meetings. Her goal has been to restore honor, faith in County government and to operate her office and County government in an honorable, transparent and open way. When asked what she wants her legacy in office to be, her answer is simple: “I want the people who live, work, play or do business here to be Anne Arundel Proud.”
