Technology for the security of our nation Maryland, and specifically, Anne Arundel County, fared exceptionally well in the 2005 BRAC Process, lending additional momentum toward enhancing Anne Arundel County’s diversified, and knowledge based economy. The BRAC decisions, when executed, will help underpin an exceptional quality of life for our citizens while increasing Anne Arundel County’s prominent role in providing the technology required for the security of our nation. Conservatively, current estimates place the direct, indirect, and induced jobs being created in Anne Arundel County in conjunction with BRAC, in the range of 9,000 to 14,000 jobs through the next six plus years, and it must be noted that a significant percentage of them are in high technology and pay extremely well. County Executive Leopold embraces BRAC “Anne Arundel County’s challenge is to not only accommodate this growth in a manner that is both efficient and effective over the long term, but to let it serve as a positive transforming catalyst for our communities.” |
What is BRAC? It is a process which the Department of Defense uses to reorganize its base structure or military towns so that they can more effectively support our forces. - In 1998 the pentagon determined that it had 20-25% more installation capacity than it needed or would need in the future. They figured they could save $7B a year by consolidating operations.
- By Law: The current BRAC process started in 2005 and must be completed by 2011
Why is BRAC Important? First and foremost BRAC will improve the effectiveness and readiness of our Armed Forces. Secondly, the three major Department of Defense organizations it will bring to Fort Meade will add 5,800 more positions and increase the economic impact on our region by an additional one billion dollars. Who will BRAC Affect? Residents and businesses of Anne Arundel County and the entire Fort George G. Meade region will benefit from the positive economic impact of BRAC. At the same time there will be challenges as we plan for potential increases in infrastructure requirements. The families of the members of the three BRAC organizations (Defense Information Systems Agency, Defense Media and Publications Activity and the Defense Security Clearance Activity) who choose to relocate to Maryland will become a welcome addition to our many communities. We must work together to make their transition as fruitful and painless as possible. Who are the Members of the Anne Arundel County BRAC Team? - Anne Arundel County residents and business leaders
- The Anne Arundel County Executive: Mr. John R. Leopold
- Special Assistant for BRAC/Education: Mr. Robert C. Leib
- The Anne Arundel County BRAC Task Force.
