BRAC and Beyond Task Force

Fort George G. Meade Growth

“Anne Arundel County is fully committed to the successful preparation of the Fort George G. Meade Region to accommodate the estimated growth associated with “BRAC 2005” in a manner that is both efficient and effective over the long term while at the same time ensuring that “BRAC” serves as a positive transforming catalyst for communities in Anne Arundel County and the region as a whole.  The Anne Arundel County BRAC Task force is paramount in guiding and coordinating our work.”

John R. Leopold
Anne Arundel County Executive

About the Task Force

The Anne Arundel County BRAC Task Force was established by County Executive John R. Leopold on March 1, 2007.  Individuals were invited to serve as members. The purpose of the task force is to help Anne Arundel County identify and prepare a plan to address the community impact associated with the federal government’s Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) recommendation which substantially increases employment opportunities connected directly and indirectly to the operations, activities and mission of Fort Meade.

Included in the scope of responsibilities the Executive has requested the group’s members undertake are:

  • Identify the opportunities and challenges that may result from the increased activities at Fort Meade
  • Identify the infrastructure needs required to support the increased activities
  • Evaluate the ability of the County to meet the challenges of BRAC
  • Make recommendations to the County Executive for appropriate ways to meet the challenges of BRAC, while continuing the high quality of life enjoyed by Anne Arundel County citizens.

The Anne Arundel County BRAC Task Force membership is composed of a diverse and far-reaching representation of community and business interests and organizations. In addition, and as a cooperative coordination measure, members of Anne Arundel County Government are also included in the membership. The Anne Arundel County BRAC Task Force is chaired by Regional BRAC Coordinator, Robert C. Leib. Appointed by the County Executive as Special Assistant for BRAC/Education, Mr. Leib reports directly to the County Executive. Mr. Leib is a resident of Harwood and brings an extensive level of both governmental business and military experience to his position.
