Adult Public Guardianship

For more information, call: (410) 222-4464
Persons who are over 65 Years old who have become unable to care for themselves and make decisions regarding their well being may require a guardian. The guardian looks after their personal needs and welfare, and makes medical decisions for them.
The Adult Public Guardianship Program first seeks to identify a relative or friend to assume medical decision-making duties. If no other person can be identified, as a final resort the Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities may be appointed as the guardian by the court. Assignment of guardianship is a legal process requiring physician recommendation and a court hearing. The Guardianship Program staff also provides education to citizens and professionals about alternatives to guardianship and medical health care advance directives.
Eligibility:
65 or older; court assignment through a very strictly defined legal process.
