Persons who are over 65 years old who have become unable to make decisions regarding their well being may need a guardian. A guardian may be appointed to look after personal needs, welfare and finances. The guardian makes necessary decisions.
The Adult Public Guardianship Program assists to identify a relative or friend to assume medical and or financial decision-making duties. Assignment of guardianship is a legal process requiring physician recommendation and a court hearing. Guardianship program staff provides education and information to citizens and professionals about the importance of medical advance directives and the guardianship process.
