Senior Scene for March 4, 2008

Good Morning Everyone, this is Jessica Henderson, from the Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities bringing you the Senior Scene with information on activities, services, and events of interest to those 55 years and beyond.

This month’s Senior Center of the Month is the O’Malley Senior Activity Center. This week, the O’Malley Senior Activity Center offers a diverse selection of services and recreational activities to all senior citizens age 55 and older.  To celebrate the center, the Department of Aging will host an art show and reception featuring the art work of center artists. The show will take place on Friday, March 14th at 1:00 p.m. at the Department of Aging and Disabilities located at 2666 Riva Road, Annapolis, MD.  The art show is free open to the public. For more information on the center’s activities, programs and services you can contact them at 410-222-6227.

If you are a senior citizen and live in North County and need information and assistance with your health insurance and Medicare options, each Monday, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. a trained volunteer from the Department of Agni’s Senior Health Insurance Program will be at the Pascal Activity Center in Glen Burnie to address your questions and concerns regarding Medicare, Medicaid eligibility, Supplemental Health and Long Term Care insurance. Are you caring for older loved one, or are you a senior citizen that is caring for an individual with a disability? If so, the Department of Aging and Disabilities National Family Caregiver Support Program is here to help. Join us on the 3rd Tuesday of each month for our Caregiver support meetings. Come and meet other individuals just like you and learn about resources and services available to help you and your loved one.  If you would like to attend or want more information, call the Family Caregiver Support Program by calling 410-222-4464 ext. 3043.

Do you need help with your taxes? Are you worried that you won’t fill out the forms correctly? Well, if you are 55 years of age and older the department of aging will be offering seniors an opportunity to meet with trained volunteers at all Senior Centers to assist with their federal and state tax forms. Appointments can be made at your local senior centers Monday through Thursday beginning this week through April 4th. This is a free service; however, donations are greatly appreciated.   Seniors may also use the public computers at the Senior Centers to download any tax forms you may need. On Monday, March 10th thru Friday, March 14th, the South County Senior Center will hold Easter Sale from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. each day. Items for sale include: Easter decorations, home-made crafts, toys and Easter Basket Items. If you would like to attend, please call the South County Senior Center at 410-222-1927.

The Office of County Executive John R. Leopold in cooperation with Ms. Sheryl Banks, Director of the Department of Aging and Disabilities is proud to announce “M.A.P.” the Maryland Access Point, a service based program that will partner with the Department of Social Services, Anne Arundel County Department of Health and other agencies to provide a streamlined point of access to county and state services available to individuals over the age of 50, individuals over 18 years of age with a disability and caregivers for seniors and persons with disabilities. The program is in the planning stages and is scheduled to be unveiled in the early spring. So Stay tuned for more information regarding this new program.
