Register Now for Caregivers' Wellness Day

Annapolis, MD (October 3, 2013) – Caregivers, sign up now for the 12th annual Caregivers’ Wellness Day.  Attend informational sessions, perhaps win an alternative therapy session, enjoy entertainment and lunch, or just sit quietly in a pleasant courtyard.

This free event is presented by the National Family Caregiver Support Program at the Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16, at the Annapolis Senior Activity Center, 119 S. Villa Ave., Annapolis, MD 21401.

“Take a break from the everyday stress of caregiving,” offers Mary Chaput, Program Director of the Respite Care Referral Program and National Family Caregiver Support Program at the Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities.  “Anyone who cares for a family member, neighbor, or friend is invited to register.”

A caregiver is defined as a person who assists a sick or disabled person, or a person who attends to the needs of a child or dependent adult.  “Many people don’t define themselves as caregivers, but if they are a lending a hand to a loved one who is becoming frail or disabled, they meet the criteria and can benefit from this event,” says Ms. Chaput.

The day begins with a light breakfast and a chance to visit with exhibitors who have information to benefit caregivers. Kicking off the day’s educational events is Ann Morrison, PhD, RN.  Dr. Morrison will discuss the many stages of caregiving.

Mini-sessions will follow, and participants can take part in just one or all of them.  Sessions include “Moments in Time,” a scrapbooking exercise with Jennifer Mermod to which participants should bring a photo or photographs for the program; “Strike A Pose: Yoga for Relaxation” with Anne Shums Contee, a health and wellness instructor; “Tai Chi” with Young Lee, an instructor with Anne Arundel Community College; and “Let’s Dance! Line Dancing Comes to Wellness Day” with Kathy McIntyre, a dance instructor at regional senior activity centers.

Jerry Roman, pianist, will perform from 11 a.m. to noon, followed by lunch and additional entertainment.  To reenergize caregivers after lunch, Heather Wandell will have participants laughing in the aisles with her presentation, “Laughter and Other Monkey Business.”  Mary Fridley, founder of Gero-Resources LLC, will present the closing session, “We Cannot direct the Wind, but We Can Adjust Our Sails,” showing attendees how to accept and make peace with life as caregivers.

All attendees will have the opportunity to win an alternative therapy session.  Volunteer alternative therapists will provide acupuncture, healing touch, and reflexology.  FREE in-home or out-of-home respite care will be provided by Active Day.  To reserve a slot, call 410-573-9100 no later than November 8th.  In addition to the Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities, the event is supported by AARP, Annapolitan Assisted Living, BayWoods of Annapolis, Chrohn’s & Colitis Information, Heritage Harbour Health & Rehabilitation, Kitchen Saver, and Westat.  The 12th annual Caregivers’ Wellness Day is open to caregivers who reside in Anne Arundel County or who are caring for a resident of Anne Arundel County.  No one under age 18 can attend.  Space is limited.  For more information or to register by November 8th, call 410-222-4464, Ext. 3043, visit or stop by the Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities located on the 4th floor of 2666 Riva Road, Annapolis, MD 21401 for a registration form.
