Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities Offering Free Chronic Conditions and Diabetes Workshops this Winter

Diabetes Workshops


Annapolis, MD (December 20, 2013) – Diabetes Education Workshops will be held at Anne Arundel Medical Center beginning in February, 2014.  The workshops are free and open to the public.  The workshops are being facilitated by Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities, which is also offering a free Diabetes Education Workshop at the South County Senior Center beginning  February 3, 2014.  “Living Well with Diabetes” is a 6 week workshop. Adults 18 and older are welcome to attend.


“Living Well with Diabetes” is appropriate for participants with pre-diabetes, Type 1 diabetes or Type 2 diabetes.  This program teaches participants how to manage their blood sugar levels as well as provides information about reading nutrition labels, counting carbohydrates, performing appropriate exercise, and how to manage symptoms associated with both high and low blood sugar levels.


Registration is underway now for the workshops.  The Anne Arundel Medical Center workshops will be held in the Belcher Pavilion, 2000 Medical Parkway.  The morning session of “Living Well with Diabetes” will be held Tuesdaymornings beginning February 4.  Classes will be held February 4, 11, 18, 25, March 4 & March 11 from 9:30 am to 12 noon.  The evening session of “Living Well with Diabetes” will be held "Wednesday evenings beginning February 5. Classes will be held February 5, 12, 19, 26, March 5 & March 12 from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm.


The South County Senior Activity Center classes will be held Tuesday mornings beginning February 3 at the South County Senior Center located at 27 Stepneys Lane, Edgewater, MD.  Classes will be held  February 3, 10, 24, March 3, 10, 17 from 9:30 am to 12 noon.  No class will be held on Monday, February 17 because of President’s Day.

Chronic Conditions Class


Living Well with Chronic Conditions” a free, six week class sponsored by the Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities, will be held from 1 – 3:30 p.m. beginning Thursday, February 6  at the Baltimore-Washington Medical Center in Glen Burnie, MD.


This self-management workshop is for adults with any chronic condition.  A chronic condition can be defined by high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, fibromyalgia, arthritis or any other medical condition that can cause suffering and loss over an extended period of time.  Workshops will teach coping methods for stress and anxiety as well as appropriate exercise methods, nutrition, medication usage, and how to communicate with physicians. 


Class size is limited to 20 individuals.  A free, 380 page textbook is included.  Participants are expected to attend all six sessions (February 6, 13, 20, 27,  March 6,  March 13).
